Syrian army warplanes staged several airstrikes on ISIL terrorist group’s self-proclaimed capital Raqa on Tuesday killing at least 95 militants, a monitoring group said in a new toll.strikes on ISIL

"Some of the strikes hit near to Islamic State posts," said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Britain-based Observatory.

Raqa was the first provincial capital in Syria to fall from regime control, and was later overrun by ISIL which has used it as the capital of its so-called "caliphate".

Raqa has also been the target of repeated air strikes by the US-led coalition fighting against the terrorists.

Meanwhile in Iraq on Tuesday, Islamic State militants reportedly blew up the al-Nasir convent in the northern city of Mosul.

The convent's nuns fled Mosul along with most other Christian residents when it was overrun by ISIL and allied militants in June.
